Tips for Soothing a Teething Baby
-
Perhaps the most common lament from a parent is “My baby is teething! What can I do?” Teething is just one of those rites of passage that both the baby and parents have to live through. There really is no way to totally stop baby teething. However, there are a variety of tips that can soothe baby teething. Not every tip works for a child. Parents will have to go through trial and error to find the best solution that works for their baby.
Teething Pain Tip #1
– Put that teething on ice. Plastic teething rings
filled with liquid and frozen are good to try and
stop baby teething pain. Or some parents will wet
part of a clean washcloth and pop it in the freezer.
The cold textured washcloth is a perfect balm to
soothe baby teething. An ice cube wrapped inside a
clean washcloth is another idea. Just be careful
that the ice cube doesn’t slip out and choke the
baby!
Teething Pain Tip #2
– Rub teething gel on the swollen gums. The answer
to the “My baby is teething” cry for help can
sometimes be solved by teething gel. This numbing
agent can be rubbed on the swollen gums of the
irritated baby’s gums and provide temporary relief.
Be warned however that some babies hate the taste
and may initially reject any efforts to rub it on
the gums.
Teething Pain Tip #3
– Over the counter pain relievers can help the pain.
Sometimes, over the counter pain relievers are
needed to not only stop baby teething pain but to
also give parents a break from the crying. Most
parents hate to give any medications to their
children, especially if they tend to spit it out.
However, getting some rest is essential for both the
parents and baby’s peace of mind. To soothe baby
teething pain, parents will try almost anything to
keep their babies comfortable. Be wary however of
the answers you receive to your “My baby is
teething” cry for help you may get from grandma.
Some of the old time remedies like rubbing brandy or
whiskey on the baby’s gums are not appropriate or
healthy for a child. Parents should rely on their
best judgment when soothing their baby’s teething.
