Keep Your Household Free of Dust Mites!
-
The dust mite is microscopic in size and commonly lives in homes, burrowing themselves into couches, carpeting, and mattresses. The home dust mite lives off the dead skin cells from human and pets and your mattress can contain as many as 10 million dust mites. They prefer to live in a warm, moist surrounding, which is why they prefer the mattress. Many people do not notice they have them in their home.
The ones that do notice are the ones that develop a dust mites allergy.
While the home dust mite is not dangerous, it can cause a dust mites allergy that will leave one with watery eyes and will cause sneezing and itching. People with a more severe case of a dust mites allergy may experience asthma attacks. When one has a dust mites allergy, they are not allergic to the dust mite itself. They are allergic to the dust mite waste or feces. If you or anyone in your household is experiencing these symptoms, you should speak with your physician and have your household tested for the home dust mite.
There are now tests you can purchase for under $10 that will help you to determine if you have a home dust mite infestation.
These will test for dust mite waste and you will need to collect samples from your sofa, carpeting, and mattress. If you do discover that you have dust mites living in your home, there are several things you can do to make your home anti dust mites.
The first step in making your home anti dust mites is to do a thorough cleaning of your blankets, sheets, pillows, curtains, and anything made of fabric. These will need to be washed in water that is very hot (130° F or above) or put in the freezer for over 24 hours. Either will kill the dust mites and help to keep your home anti dust mites. Once everything is washed, you’ll need to do a thorough vacuuming of the floor, mattress, and bed frame.
When this is completed, you will need to find an anti dust mite mattress or anti dust mite mattress cover. These are made from a plastic that can not be penetrated by the dust mite.
You should be able to purchase an anti dust mite mattress cover from almost any department store.
To keep your home anti dust mites, you’ll need to do a thorough vacuum of the floor and under the bed at least twice a week, wash your pillows and blankets once a week, and as they prefer warm, moist areas, keep your home cool and dry.
